Lapu-Lapu (1491 – 1542) was a chief of the Visayans on the island of Mactan in what is now Cebu, Philippines.
Biography
A rival of Rajah Humabon from the neighboring Cebu, Lapu-Lapu had gained possession of an artifact left behind by the Isu. In April 1521, he used the artifact to lead his men to wage a resistance campaign against the Spanish expedition led by Ferdinand Magellan, who had come seeking the artifact. Lapu-Lapu and his men defeated the Spanish, with the chief personally killing Magellan himself.[2] For his resistance to Spanish colonization, Lapu-Lapu was regarded as the first hero in Filipino folklore.[3]
