Kazan is the capital and largest city of the Republic of Tatarstan in Russia. The city lies at the confluence of the Volga and Kazanka rivers in European Russia, and is considered the Sports capital of Russia.
History[edit | edit source]
During the Russian Revolution, the city became a hotspot in which there was an attempt to form an alternative socialist government to the Bolshevik regime.[1] During the summer of 1918, the city was taken over by the Czechoslovak Legion. In September, the Red Army under Leon Trotsky would initiate the Kazan Operation to retake the city from the Czechs.[2]
On 7 September, in the midst of the Kazan Operation, the Russian Assassin Nikolai Orelov travelled to the city with Anastasia Nikolaevna to look for Trotsky, who could help them secure passage to Moscow, where the Russian Brotherhood was located. Nikolai navigated through the war-torn city and reached Trotsky's home, only to be betrayed by his friend, who believed that Anastasia needed to die to further the Revolution.[3]
After Nikolai was captured by the Templars and imprisoned in a Cheka barracks, Anastasia, aided by Shao Jun's skills, mounted a rescue mission and freed the Assassin.[4] The two then worked together to escape the city whilst avoiding the fighting between the Red Army and the Czechs. Eventually, Nikolai and Anastasia managed to reach Kazan's docks and, after fending off a Red Army assault, left the city by boat.[5]
