Jailbreak was a virtual representation of one of Basim Ibn Ishaq's genetic memories relived through the Animus.

Description

Basim met with Fuladh Al Haami outside the Damascus Gate Prison, where Ali ibn Muhammad was held.

Dialogue

  • Basim: Fuladh has gone ahead to scout a way into the Damascus Gate Prison. I should find him. But before I do, it may serve me well to seek out this blacksmith. Any improvements he could offer would prove useful.

Eventually, Basim met with Fuladh on a roof outside the prison.

  • Fuladh: There it is. As cruel and unforgiving as I remember.
  • Basim: You were once imprisoned here?
  • Fuladh: Oh, no, I have never been inside. In fact, I have never stood close than this very place. It was from here that I would fly my kite high over these prison walls. It had an unique pattern, you see. One I stitched together with my father when I was just a boy. So here I came day after day, hoping for a gust that would take it high enough so that he would see it and know that I was here. I do not know if he ever did.
Basim and Fuladh discussing the plan to enter the prison
  • Basim: I know this pain. And I am sorry for yours.
  • Fuladh: I am not. Such pains forge our paths. Remind us of who we are. Who we can be.
  • Basim: Speaking of paths, I see only one. And it is not inviting.
  • Fuladh: No. We need to find a way to get you inside without being seen.
  • Basim: Could this help?

Bsim showed Fuladh the token Beshi had given him earlier.

  • Fuladh: Where did you get that?
  • Basim: Beshi. He told me these tokens command a high value among the common folk.
  • Fuladh: Indeed. You could perhaps bribe the guards to look the other way. Or enlist the help of some merchants.
  • Basim: I shall see what flavor best suits me.
  • Fuladh: I will take my leave and return to the Bureau. Waffaqaka Allah. (May God grant you success.)

Basim talking to rebels near the prison

Basim spoke to a group of rebels on the right of the building.

  • Basim: Are you men with Ali?
  • Rebel: We were. But it has been weeks since we have seen him and the rebels have all but disbanded.
  • Basim: That is only temporary. Ali is being held in this prison.
  • Rebel: Ali! Here? I feared him dead..
  • Basim: I will free him, but I need your help to get me inside.
  • Rebel: And who are you? We want nothing more than to see our leader returned but... how do I know you can be trusted?

The rebels entering the prison from the walls
  • Basim: Beshi told me I could exchange this token for your help. What say you?
  • Rebel: If he gave you this, he must hold you in high regard. We will take care of the guards. Watch us closely, then make your move.

The rebels moved to a section of the wall and climbed up, reaching the inner courtyard and attacking the guards. The distraction allowed Basim to get inside the prison.

  • Basim: It stinks of sweat and hopelessness.

Basim speaking to the merchant about entering the prison

Basim spoke to a merchant near the Iron Gate.

  • Basim: Lords, you are shrewd men of business. Care to hear a proposition?
  • Merchant: So long as it is an attractive one, my friend. What is it?
  • Basim: I need to go into the prison. Unnoticed. I thought perhaps you could let me pose as one of your aids.
  • Merchant: Hmm... possibly. And in exchange?

  • Basim: This token. Do you recognize it?
  • Merchant: Well, well... an attractive proposition indeed! Stay close to me, and follow my lead.

Basim picked up a crate, carrying on his shoulder and followed the merchant as they enter the prison through the main gate.

  • Merchant: Guards, if you would please displace yourselves.
  • Soldier: Yes, yes.
  • Merchant: Please, give way. Move, please. Hadhari! (Look out!)

They passed by the soldiers while the merchant unlocked the door to a room. Basim put down the crate.

  • Basim: I shall not trouble you further. My thanks, sadeeqi (friend).
Into the lion's den we go.

Regardless of the method, Basim managed to get inside the prison, where he read a note on a nearby table.

Doubling Efforts

To all,

The masked man is displeased by the rate at which the dig is progressing. Six prisoners have died and the others become more frail with each passing day. We will need to rouse more men and begin alternating their shifts. This should provide a consistent workflow and speed the operation along.

Lastly, I remind you that any discovery must remain secret. No witnesses.

Basim entered an inner courtyard filled with prisoners then found an adjacent passage into the complex. In the first room, he saw a note on a table under a lantern.

Guard Correspondence

Sayyidi,

I have searched through our records. We've received no transfer of prisoners from the Damascus Gate for several months now I can only think that, despite what you were told, the prisoners you saw leaving your premises were destined for another location, not ours. That or, strangely, they never arrived. A veritable problem indeed. You should inform your superiors

Basim continued on, sneaking past the guards and eavesdropping on their conversations.

  • Soldier 1: Where are you returning from smelling like that?
  • Soldier 2: Where do you think?
  • Soldier 1: Ah. The "dungeon". Is the jailer poking truths out of our mouthy friend?
  • Soldier 2: Only insults and globs of spit, both of which are equally foul.
  • Soldier 1: Eh, give it time. It is all part of the method, is it not?
  • Soldier 2: How should I know? I am not a mad man...
  • Basim: Ali has been taken somewhere beneath the prison and likely tortured. I need to hurry.

Basim reached a torture chamber, where he eliminated the guards and came across a wounded prisoner.

Basim enquiring the tortured prisoner
  • Civilian: (pained groans)
  • Basim: Who did this to you?
  • Civilian: The... jailer...
  • Basim: Where is he?
  • Civilian: With another... beneath us. Death... will come for him soon.
  • Basim: He may be speaking of Ali. I pray I am not too late.

Basim explored deeper and saw another note.

High Profile Prisoner

Men,

The traitor Ali ibn Muhammad has been captured and is expected to arrive just before nightfall. Our orders are to isolate and prepare him for interrogation.

Clear a space in the catacombs and inform the jailer that Ali holds high-value information about the identity of his allies. He may extract it by any means he deems fit, so long as the prisoner does not expire.

He made his way to the lower chambers.

  • Elder 1: I never thought demons could walk the earth but that man... is evil.
  • Elder 2: Do not lose hope. That is what the jailer wants. He wants to break us.
  • Elder 1: He already has.

Basim read a note pinned to a table with a knife.

A Word on Restraint

Jailers,

Be judicious. While enemies of the state must not bear their knowledge to the grave, every tortured martyr's wail is a clarion call. We must detect their skulking sympathizers, not summon more from the shadows through wanton brutality. Cozen where you can. Be as the Uyun, the Eyes of the Caliphate. Do not let bloodlust blind the body you serve.

- Muhammad ibn Tahir

He eventually reached an inner chamber, where he overheard the jailer speaking to Ali.

Basim discovering the jailer preparing to torture Ali
  • Jailer: I thought you would have had your fill by now. But still you persist. Not to worry. There are ways to encourage you along. Your friend in the white hood. You are to tell me all about him. Who he is. Where he hails from.
  • Ali: You mother's arse.
  • Jailer: I can keep doing this, little rodent. The question is, can you?
  • Ali: Let us find out together, shall we?
  • Jailer: A slow death it is.

Basim eliminated the jailer.

  • Ali: And you are?
  • Basim: Basim. Friend to Nur. Let us save the details for another time. We need to get you out of here.

Basim freed Ali from his cuffs.

Basim freeing Ali
  • Ali: Slow yourself, ya 'azeezi (my dear boy). We cannot leave, not yet. I need to get into the guards' quarters.
  • Basim: What for?
  • Ali: It is Al-Ghul you are after, is it not? The guards of this prison serve him. They take shifts escorting groups of prisoners to dig sites under the cover of night. If we can find their orders, we may know where Al-Ghul is going next. Is that reason enough?
  • Basim: Stay close to me. Stay low. And do not—
  • Ali: Oh, come Basim. I know how to defend myself.
  • Basim: Really? What with?

Ali picked up the jailer's sword.

  • Ali: Let's try to not get in each other's way. Tell me, Basim, because I must know... just how did you make it down here?
  • Basim: Easy. I sucked in my belly and wiggled through the cracks.
  • Ali: Take it as a compliment. I know your kind like to frolic in the dark but even the world's greatest thief would steer clear of this prison.
  • Basim: Ali, one day I will tell you all about my past. Then you will understand.
  • Ali: Such a tease.
Ali and Basim fighting through the guards

They navigated their way to the guard's room, fighting through guards along the way.

  • Ali: The guards' room is through that door.

Basim unlocked the door.

  • Soldier: There they are! Quickly!

Inside, Basim saw another note on a table.

New Measures: Prisoner Transfers

At the express request of the Caliph, each prison in Baghdad is hereby ordered to increase the frequency by which its population is cycled. The Caliphate has had remarkable success in thwarting the rebellion, but with that reality comes another: their numbers within the prisons swell. This measure is a prudent one aimed at stopping any attempt at an organized uprising.

Ali and Basim entered the room, with Basim guarding the door with his body to prevent the guards from coming in, while Ali began his search.

  • Soldier: They're in here!
  • Basim: We will not have much time.
  • Soldier: Break it down!
  • Basim: Ali!
  • Ali: I heard you!

Something called Basim's eye, and he pointed Ali towards the table, where a book rested.

  • Basim: Over there! By the armor. Hurry!
Ali holding the book

Ali picked up the book.

  • Ali: I have it!
  • Basim: Take it to Roshan, my master. She is with your rebels at the watermill stronghold. I will slow the guards. Now go!

The soldiers forced their way into the room, forcing Basim to fight against them.

Outcome

Basim rescued Ali from the prison and, in the process, the pair acquired a book containing clues about Al-Ghul's identity.
