Italy (Latin and Italian: Italia) is a country located in southern Europe that shares borders with France, Switzerland, Austria, and Slovenia to the north.

History

Isu Era

During the Isu era, the First Civilization built at least three vaults in the area that would one day become the city of Rome. Certain of the Isu were later considered as gods by the Romans and ancient Greeks, with Jupiter, Minerva, and Juno comprising what would be remembered as the Capitoline Triad, a group of gods worshipped on the Capitoline Hill.[1]

Roman Era

Between the 8th century BCE and the 7th century BCE, the Greeks founded many colonies in the South of Italy. The city of Naples, Sybaris and Croton formed the Magna Graecia. During the 6th century BCE, the mathematician Pythagoras visited Italy and discovered one of the Isu vaults. His followers built a Temple on the site of the vault to hide it.[1]

According to legends, the city of Rome was founded in 753 BCE by Romulus after he killed his twin brother Remus. In 510 BCE the monarchy of Rome fell and the Roman Republic was created. The Republic conquered all of Italy and gradually conquering all other lands around the Mediterranean as in Hispanica, Cyrenaica and Greece. Circa 60 BCE, the Roman Republic became became influencial power in Egypt and the Middle East with the military campaigns of the consul Pompey. Another consul, Julius Caesar, conquered Gaul in 52 BCE.[2]

In 49 BCE, a Civil War began between the two consul. After becoming dictator, Caesar tracked Pompey in Egypt. In 46 BCE, after triumphing from Pompey's and Ptolemy XIII's army, Caesar returned in Rome with Cleopatra VII, the pharaoh of Egypt, and their son Caesarion. In Egypt, Caesar became involved with the Order of the Ancients, a secret society which controlled Egypt for over a millenia. Two of their members, Lucius Septimius, who had killed Pompey, and Flavius Metellus, the proconsul of Cyrenaica, became close allies of Caesar. The dictator of the Republic even became the Father of Understanding of the Order.[2]

The senators Marcus Junius Brutus and Gaius Cassius Longinus feared that Caesar took the control of the Republic and decided to act. They entered in contact with Aya of Alexandria, a former ally of Cleopatra who was betrayed by the Queen as she protected the Order which was responsible of her son's death, Khemu. Together, they founded the Hidden Ones, also known as the Liberatores, a secret group dedicated to protect the liberty of people. The 15th March 44 BCE, Aya killed Septimius and with Brutus, Longinus and other senators, they assassinated Caesar in the Roman Senate. After the death of the dictator, Cleopatra returned in Egypt after Aya threated her. Aya renamed herself Amunet and became the leader of the Hidden Ones in Rome.[2]

After Caesar's death, the Roman Republic was led by a triumvirat composed by Marcus Antonius, Lepidus and Octavianus, Caesar's adopted son and new Grand master of the Order of the Ancients. Together they tracked the responsible of Caesar's assassination. Brutus and Longinius flew Rome and committed suicide in Greece in 42 BCE. Later, Antonius became Cleopatra's lover and the Octavianus's rival. A new Civil War began in 31 BCE between Octavianus and Antonius. In 30 BCE, the Grand Master of the Ancients was victorious from his enemies after Antonius and Cleopatra committed suicide. But Amunet saved Caesarion from the Romans and decided to traine him in Rome to become a Hidden Ones.[3]

In 27 BCE, Octavianus created the Roman Empire, becoming known as the emperor Augustus. The emperor Caligula, one of Augustus' successor, was manipulated by the Order of the Ancients. In 41 CE, the Hidden Ones Leonius with other members of his Brotherhood stabbed to death the emperor.[4]

Around 60 CE, one of Jesus Christ's disciple, Simon Peter who wielded a Staff of Eden arrived in Rome and spread the christian religion in Italy. In 67, the emperor Nero ordered Peter's execution and the persucution of the Christians. The Staff of Eden passed in the hands of the leaders of the Christian community. During the 4th century, the Christianity became the official religion of the Empire.[1]

Middle Ages

In 476, the Western Roman Empire fell after the barbaric invasions. During the 5th century, the Ostrogoths controlled the city of Florence but the Eastern Roman Empire tried to take it back. During the 6th century, the Lombards were the rulers of Florence. With all this troubles, Italy was divided into numerous regional states. In 697, a Republic was formed in the city of Venice.[4] In 751, the bishop of Rome founded his own state, becomming the Pope and the spiritual leader of Catholic World. During the 11th century, the Normans invaded the South of Italy and founded the Kingdom of Naples.[1] During the 12th Century, Florence became a Republic.[4]

Renaissance

Italy served as the birthplace of the Renaissance, a cultural movement which soon spread throughout all of Europe, during the 15th century. At this point, Italy was not yet a unified country, and was divided into numerous regional states that each strove to conquer the other lands of Italy. The primary polities were the Republic of Florence, the Republic of Venice and the Papal States.[4]

When Rodrigo Borgia became Grand Master of the Italian Templars in 1476,[5] the Templars made plans to take over the main cities of northern Italy; notably Milan, Florence, Venice and Rome. Although most of their initial attempts were thwarted by the Assassins, thanks to the actions of Ezio Auditore da Firenze, the Templars nonetheless managed to seize control of Rome and the rest of the Papal States when Rodrigo Borgia was crowned Pope Alexander VI.[4]

Rodrigo's son, Cesare Borgia, further conquered several other regions of Italy in his role as Captain General of the Papal Armies. However, due to the subsequent actions of the Assassins, coupled with Rodrigo's death at the hands of his son, the Templars' influence in Rome and Italy reduced. The succeeding Popes, Pius III and Julius II, did not favor Cesare, and the Templars' influence in Italy collapsed, while the Assassins maintained a strong presence in the country.[1]

World War I

In the century after its unification occurred, Italy joined with the British Empire in First World War, supporting against the German Empire.

World War II

During the inter-war period, the dictator Benito Mussolini, joined forces with the Templar puppet, and dictator of Germany, Adolf Hitler. Together with Japan, the Axis was formed, and the Second World War started against the Allies, perpetrated by the United Kingdom, the United States and the Soviet Union, led by Winston Churchill, Franklin D. Roosevelt and Joseph Stalin, both three, sympathizers of the Templar Order.

Modern times

By the early 21st Century the Templars had returned to prominence in the country, thanks mainly to the establishment of an Abstergo Industries laboratory in Rome.[6] In 2012, a team of Assassins consisting of Desmond MilesLucy StillmanShaun Hastings, and Rebecca Crane traveled through the country in the weeks after Desmond escaped from the Roman facility.[4]
