Huế, formerly known as Phú Xuân (富春), is a coastal city in central Vietnam. It served as the capital of the Nguyễn clan and the Nguyễn dynasty that succeeded it, and later as the capital of Vietnam's Thừa Thiên Huế province. On 1 January 2025, the Thừa Thiên Huế province was upgraded to become Vietnam's sixth centrally-governed municipality, named Huế. As such, the name Huế can be used to refer to both the city itself and the province it belongs to.[1]
History
In 1725, the Qing businesswoman Lee Huiyin traveled to Phú Xuân, where she met with a Nguyễn clan official at the Imperial Palace. Revealing that she was in possession of a powerful artifact, Lee offered to lend her support to the Nguyễn clan's attempted conquest of the Khmer Kingdom in exchange for the clan's aid in retrieving another artifact from Angkor. The official was skeptical of Lee's claims, but after the businesswoman revealed her alliance with the Chinese Assassins Xiao Han, Liu Qing, and Xue Yan, the official agreed to negotiate a deal.[2]
