Hilary Flint

Hillary Flint

Hillary Flint (1682 - 1717) was the third son of an aristocratic family in the 17th century. Eventually, he found his way to the West Indies, where he became a member of the Templar Order.

In 2013, his genetic memories were used as an Animi Avatar by the entertainment branch of the Templar company Abstergo Industries, to influence the general public via the Animus game console, under the title of the Navigator.

Biography

Immersed in the study of maths and science since his youth, Hillary developed a particular liking for explosives. He was sent off to a military school as a teenager by his parents, in the hopes that this interest might be molded into a more socially acceptable form. He soon found a home within the school's many clubs thanks to his easygoing personality.

He became a member of the Templar Order sometime before 1717, when he received the orders to find and kill Rhona Dinsmore. This led him to Havana, where he stationed himself with a squadron of soldiers. Soon after, he started a fued with Dinsmore, the city's Master Assassin.

When Edward Kenway sought Dinsmore out to warn her of the danger he brought upon her by selling a map with her location to the Templar Grand Master Laureano de Torres y Ayala, he found her under attack near the bureau and helped defending her against Flint's men. After some investigations, they discovered that Flint was running an arms race against the Assassins, having several storages of gunpowder hidden throughout the city. Edward destroyed these to weaken Flint's position, after which they decided to assassinate Flint.

Rhona engaged Flint in combat, taunting him as she did so, allowing Edward to circle around and assassinate Flint from behind. With his final words, Flint expressed his regrets over the fact that they could never fight together.

Final words

• Hillary: I knew we would end in fire, but I always thought our positions would be reversed. I should have died happier, knowing there was one less Assassin in the world.

Hillary reached upwards and caressed Rhona's cheek.

• Hillary: What a pity, we could never fight together on the correct side of things.
• Edward: Would, uh... you two, like a moment alone?

Hillary succumbed to his wounds.

• Rhona: No. It's too late.

Rhona closed Hillary's eyes and took the Templar key he had in his possession.

• Rhona: Take it. His charm's all used up. Let the memory of him be locked away for good.

Trivia

• Hillary is derived via Latin hilaris from Greek ‘Ιλαρος (hilaros), meaning "cheerful". The surname Flint referred to those who lived near a significant outcrop of flint (a material that could be used to ignite fire or gunpowder). It could also be used as a nickname for a hard-hearted or physically tough individual.
