During the [[Golden Age of Piracy]], the gunboat was used as a quick response attack vessel by not only the navies, but civilian operators as well. This lightly armed vessel provided ample speed and a quick rate of fire, and could be crewed by as few as five people. The trade-off being that it bore next-to-no armor whatsoever. Each ship bore a single mast, and was capable of fielding just two guns per side over a single deck.

Gunboats vary from level 1 to 6. Gunboats carry no resources (metal, wood, cloth, rum or sugar) but carry fire barrels at low level and can carry mortar shot or heavy shot at higher level.
Gunboats can not be boarded if shot at as the have nothing worth boarding for but once destroyed and looted you will recieve 100% of what is onboard instead of recieving only 50% of resources when destroying other ships. If boarded by Edward kenway alone it only has 5 crew.
