Goll was a Norse thegn of her clan in West Francia during the late 9th century. She served under previous Viking jarl Sigfred.

Biography

Not much is known about Goll, except that she worked her way up as a warrior to be a thegn under Sigfred's command. It appeared that she also worked alongside Sigfred's niece, Toka Sinricsdottir.[1]

The Siege of Paris

During Charles the Fat's campaign in West Francia, Goll worked and followed Sigfred, alongside Toka and their ally, Viking jarlskona Eivor Varinsdottir of the Raven Clan. However, Goll took a strong dislike to Eivor's presence and work, due to Eivor's multiple interactions with Frankish royal members, such as King Charles, Count Odo of France, and Queen Richardis.[1]

After all the siege preparations were finished, an annoyed Goll greeted an incoming Eivor. Goll chastisted her as Eivor kept reaffirming her questions. After a while, Goll finally stated she had to wait as Sigfred and Toka Sinricsdottir were receiving more catapults. Due to Goll's presence, however, Eivor left to wait elsewhere. The next day, Goll joined alongside her jarl, Sigfred. for the upcoming siege.[2]

After breaking through the gates of Île de la Cité, Goll led Sigfred's warriors, as Eivor accompanied them. Defeating any of the incoming Frankish soldiers, Goll noticed that her path was dark, as bodies of Norse warriors began to increase. At the gates of Saint-Étienne, Goll, Eivor, Sigfred, and Toka, along with their warriors, were caught in an ambush. As they fought back the ambush, Goll let out a shout of confidence as she fought against her attackers. Unknown to her, Count Odo set up his crossbow and shot down Goll dead. Over Goll's deceased body, Sigfred came and kneeled to see his lost thegn before retreating.[3]
