George Villiers, 1st Duke of Buckingham (1592 – 1628) was an English courtier and statesman. He was a favorite and self-described "lover" of King James VI and I.[1]

Biography[edit | edit source]

In 1624, Villiers purchased the York House from the Archbishop of York. Two years later, wanting his new home to be accessible from the river, he had the York Watergate built.[2]
