The Foreign Office, later known as the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office is a building in London, England.

History[edit | edit source]

In 1857 a contest was held to find a design for the new building for the Foreign Office once the original had fallen into disrepair. Although George Gilbert Scott's placed second, he was hired for the job at the insistence of Prime Minister Derby, who loved Scott's Gothic style. Before Scott could get any work done, however, Lord Palmerston was elected Prime Minister and demanded that Scott build the Foreign Office in a Classical style, which he detested.[1]

The Foreign Office was completed in 1868, in a Classical Italianate style[1] and it originally housed four British government offices: the Foreign Office, the India Office, the Colonial Office, and the Home Office.[2]
