Florence Farr being assaulted by Aleister Crowley

Florence Farr (7 July 1860 – 29 April 1917) was an English actress, composer, director, women's rights activist, journalist, educator, singer, novelist, and a leader of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn.

Biography

After William Wynn Westcott retired from the Order, Samuel Liddell MacGregor Mathers had Farr take his place as leader in England.

While at the Isis-Urania Temple in London, Mathers' protege, Aleister Crowley, came demanding she allow him into the Inner Order. When she refused, Crowley jumped onto her desk, shouting and raising his fist. Seeing her terrified response, Crowley began laughing.

Mathers eventually initiated Crowley into the Inner Order, starting a rift that led to Farr's departure from the Order.

Trivia

  • While recounting Crowley's attack on Farr, William Robert Woodman refers to her as "Miss Farras", "Miss Farrat", and "Miss Farris".
