Deorlaf was the Bishop of Quatford in Shropshire during the 9th century.
Biography
In the 870s, Deorlaf was called upon to stand in for the slain ealdorman of Shropshire during peace talks with King Rhodri the Great at Quatford, only for Ivarr the Boneless to scupper the peace talks by killing King Rhodri's brother Gwriad ap Merfyn. [citation needed]
Deorlaf later worked with Eivor Varinsdottir, Ceolbert, and Ivarr to defeat the Britons in Shropshire, negotiating with Rhodri's wife Angharad ferch Meurig to conclude a new peace treaty. The treaty was violated when Ceolbert was murdered, supposedly by the Britons, leading to the storming of Caustow Castle and Rhodri's capture. [citation needed] However, Ivarr later confessed his responsibility for the murder to Eivor after executing Rhodri by way of a blood eagle, leading to a fatal duel at the Manstone Rock in which Eivor slew Ivarr. Deorlaf initially believed that Ivarr had been killed by the Britons, but Eivor told him the truth, and had Deorlaf send a messenger to Angharad to assure her that Rhodri had been killed through treachery and that Ivarr had paid the price. Deorlaf then broke the news that, since Ceolbert's death, King Ceolwulf II of Mercia had appointed him to serve as the new ealdorman, and Deorlaf swore to be a friend and ally to Eivor until the day he died.[1]
