The Continental Army was the main military force of the newly-formed United States during the American Revolutionary War.

Major General George Washington was elected the Commander-in-Chief of the Continental Army by the Continental Congress in 1775, who created the army for the purpose of engaging in combat with the armed forces of the British Empire.

After six years of fighting, the British were eventually defeated in 1781, thanks to the much-needed assistance from the Kingdom of France, and withdrew from the American colonies entirely after the Treaty of Paris ended the war in 1783. Following this, the majority of the soldiers for the Continental Army went home to their families, and what few units remained would form the nucleus of the United States Army.
