―Charles the Fat to Eivor Varinsdottir.[src]-[m]

Charles III (839 – 888), also known as Charles the Fat or the Mad King, was the great-grandson of Charlemagne[1] and the last emperor of the Carolingian Empire to rule over the Kingdom of West Francia.

In the last few years of his reign alongside his wife Richardis, Paris was subjected to a Viking siege that led to his downfall[2] and eventual deposition.[3]

Biography

During his youth, Charles was haunted by "demons" and as a result was subjected to a purification ritual involving fire. While Charles feigned to be cleansed of all demons and became a pious man, he developed a crippling fear of fire due to the experience. Charles remained a kind and pious man well into adulthood, even through he was subjected to random manic episodes in his alone time, where he talked to himself and his "demon" within him. It noted by Richardis that during his time hearing her prayers, his demons receded and he became a gentle and kind man.[4]

Personality

Charles was considered quite unpopular among his people, as many of his citizens walked in poverty, leaving them to be the fodder of the new plague epidemic that was ravaging Paris, and even raised taxes to exorbitant and abusive levels, which that allowed him to enrich himself with the nobles and the Church. He also spoiled a large part of his dealings, as he once tricked Eivor into bringing his wife Richardis saying she mattered a lot, but he actually wanted her to tell him where his son is Bernard, whom he loved very much and who considered his heir to the throne of France, turning out to be strictly overprotective of him, as he believed that he was the target of the Bellatores Dei, for his impression of being able to kill a Pope.

He was an extremely religious man who was tortured from a young age, which caused him to develop a terrible fear of fire and go to hell for his sins. He hated the Norse people, as he believed that if they conquered France, his pagan ideas would separate Charles from Christianity from him, which is why he plan to invade neighborhood island England, which the Norse had just taken. The reason Charles was tortured was that since childhood he had multiple personality disorder, which made him believe that he was possessed by a demon. The demon seemed to have a deep hatred for the Biblical character known as Whore of Babylon, and always played word games with Charles. Believing that he was influenced by his demon over time, he became extremely vicious, as he ate excessively and slept with prostitutes disguised as nuns to feed his paraphilias. Carlos was afraid of the devil as it meant his descent into hell. However, when he received spiritual guidance he became a little more kind and caring person for a time, but he always returned to his old personality. One night when he saw that God forgave his wife for committing adultery, something he believed in since he married, he began to kill all of her servants and to reject his Christianity replacing it with him. demon inside him.[5]
