Cebu is a province of the Philippines consisting of a main island and 167 surrounding islands and islets.
History
In 1521, the Spanish explorer Ferdinand Magellan arrived on the island with the main goal of locating an artifact left behind by the Isu. He met the local leader Rajah Humabon and converted him and the local population to Catholicism with an idea to turn Cebu in a Spanish colony. When Magellan was able to locate the artifact on the island, Humabon revealed to him that it was merely a fragment of a larger artifact which had been seized by Lapu-Lapu, the chieftain of the neighboring Mactan Island. Magellan and his men fought against the artifact-empowered Lapu-Lapu and his men on the island beach, resulting in the Spanish defeat and Magellan's death.[1]
Some years after Magellan's death, an explorer who came to follow up on Magellan's search visited the Basilica del Santo Niño in Cebu, where he met a monk who reluctantly told him of Magellan's attempt to recover the powerful treasure and his fate. The monk made no mention of what happened to the artifact later on, leading the explorer to leave and delve deeper into the legend.[1]
