Catherine II Alexeievna (Russian: Екатерина II Алексеевна; 1729 – 1796), commonly known as Catherine the Great, was the Empress of Russian Empire from 1762 until her death. She was Russia's longest-ruling female leader, and the country was revitalized during her reign, becoming recognized as one of the great powers of Europe.

Biography[edit | edit source]

In 1762, Catherine, alongside a group of discontented Russian nobles staged a successful coup to remove Tsar Peter III from power. They exploited his unpopularity, secured the support of key military and government figures, and pressured Peter into abdicating the throne. On 9 July, Catherine the Great was declared Empress of Russia.[1] Following the coup d'état her husband was assassinated, possibly by the Assassin Brotherhood.[2]
