Sister Blaeswith (died 870s), also known as The Rake or The Archbishop's Shadow, was an Anglo-Saxon nun who served as a Maegester within the Order of the Ancients, leading the Wardens of Faith sect. She frequented the premises of Saint Martin's Church in Canterbury, Cent.
Biography[edit | edit source]
Depressed after being forsaken by her first love, Blaeswith committed her life to the nunnery at the push of her father. However, through luck, she felt a new love kindling, for the Order. With a vigor, Blaeswith immersed herself within the Order's manners and idealism, which helped her rise in the ranks to become the leader of the Wardens of Faith.[1]
In the 870s, the Viking Eivor Varinsdottir of the Raven Clan first learned about The Rake's title and position within the Order from a clue recovered from Beneseck, The Bell, after killing him, which revealed that The Rake wore black. The second clue came from the assassination of Yohanes Loukas, The Oil, and it proclaimed that The Rake's occupation appeared to be at the ruins of an old church.[1]
Around 877, in Wincestre, Eivor killed Selwyn, The Gallows, and recovered a third clue about The Rake, which detailed that the Maegester was hiding behind the act of doing God's work.[2] After also eliminating Hilda, The Quill, Eivor recovered a note from her personal effects revealing that The Rake lived in a highly devout area.[3] Lastly, the fall of Ealhferth, The Seax, provided the Viking with a fifth clue about The Rake's identity, which dictated that The Rake worked within the region of Cent.[4]
Following the death of Heika, The Sickle, Eivor recovered the final clue, which allowed her to determine The Rake's identity and location. Arriving at St. Martin's Church in Canterbury, the Viking assassinated Blaeswith as the sister was talking with the area's constituents and offering her services, marking the end of the Wardens of Faith.[1]
Trivia[edit | edit source]
- Blaeswith's cutscene in the Memory Corridor is quite brief, when compared to the cutscenes of other Maegesters, such as Fulke or Gorm Kjotvesson.
- It is unknown if Blaeswith had a hand with the events in Wincestre, as she was in charge of the three Order members – The Gallows, The Quill and The Seax – who were plotting to assassinate King Alfred.
- Like The Crozier towards The Billhook, Blaeswith took on Beneseck, The Bell, as an apprentice. However, her methods of guidance were more torturous and psychologically abusive than The Crozier's.
- Along with other Order members such The Crozier, The Leech, The Firebrand, and Bishop Ealhferth, Blaeswith never believed in the Christian God but rather hid her beliefs of the "true" Gods.
- This correlates to Rodrigo Borgia admitting such a confession to Ezio Auditore da Firenze, amidst their fight in the Vatican Vault at the end of Assassin's Creed II.
