Bernardo di Bandino Baroncelli (1453-1480) was a banker for the Pazzi and one of the Pazzi conspirators who attempted to murder Lorenzo de' Medici and his brother Giuliano. He grew up learning to hate the Medici for the exile of his cousins. As one of the men who Jacopo de' Pazzi hired to kill Lorenzo, he was the one who delivered the first blow to Guiliano. Baroncelli was later captured while attempting to flee to Constantinople but escaped to San Gimignano. Baroncelli was later assassinated by Ezio Auditore da Firenze in San Gimignano. He was evidently becoming paranoid of Ezio and Lorenzo and was muttering to himself how to stay safe.

Final Words

Baroncelli: I knew you would come...

Ezio: Where is Jacopo?

Baroncelli: So you could do to him what you've done to me?

Ezio: There's still time for you to clear your conscience.

Baroncelli: We gather at the church when a meeting is called.

Ezio: Mi duole dover giungere a tanto. (I am sorry that it came to this.) Requiscat in Pace. (Rest in peace.)

Trivia

  • In real life, Baroncelli tried to flee to Constantinople after the Pazzi conspiracy failed, but was arrested, sent back to Florence and later hanged. A record of his execution can be found in a sketch of his hanging made by Leonardo da Vinci.
  • Interestingly enough, Baroncelli is said to have been returned to Tuscany from Constantinople, but at the time, the Ottoman Turks occupied the city, so it would be strange for a wealthy Christian to attempt to travel to a now Muslim city.
