The advertising standpoint is a valid point, yes, but Altair was more influential in the story than the amount of screentime implied. Ubi could get away with saying he was an important part of the story because he more or less set up the events that led Ezio to do what he did in the game. All of his actions were focused around finding the keys left behind by Altair.
