- "I write this in honor of Lord Augustine, first Archbishop of Canterbury, sent here by blessed Gregory, Bishop of the city of Rome, who with the help of God, guided King Ethelbert and his people from the worship of idols to the Faith of Christ."
- ―A scroll describing Augustine's contributions.[src]
Augustine of Canterbury (died c. 604) was a Benedictine monk who became the first Archbishop of Canterbury. He is considered the "Apostle to the English" and a founder of the Church of England.
Biography[edit | edit source]
In 595,[1] Augustine was sent by the Bishop of Rome, Gregory I, to Britain to convert the locals to Christianity. During his time in the Kingdom of Kent, he converted King Ethelbert of Kent and his citizens.[2] This ultimately led to the establishment of churches in the kingdom,[1] and his appointment as the first Archbishop of Canterbury.[2]
Following his death, Augustine was revered as a saint, and worship of him continued well into the 9th century, such that a group of soldiers based in the Canterbury Barracks sought to continue Augustine's work.[3]
