The Abbazia di San Mercuriale (English: Abbey of Saint Mercurialis) is the main religious building located in the Italian city of Forlì. It is located on the central square, near the Palazzo Comunale.

The tower of the Abbey of San Mercuriale, with its height of 75 meters, is one of the tallest in Italy. The first church on the site was destroyed by fire in 1173. The present structure was built with brick in the Lombard-Romanesque style and took only 7 years.[1][2]

The colonnade to the right of the church is part of the abbey's cloister.[1][2]

History[edit | edit source]

In 1488, after speaking with one of the monks of the abbey, the Assassin Ezio Auditore da Firenze was able to learn the identity of the nine-fingered monk who had stolen the Apple of Eden.[3]

Prior to Lorenzo de' Medici's death, he assigned assassination contracts to Ezio from a pigeon coop situated on the roof behind the abbey's tower.[3]

Trivia[edit | edit source]

  • A glyph can be found on the inside arch of the abbey's courtyard, facing east.
  • The abbey is the tallest point in Forlì and Romagna.
  • This is one of the center locations of the Forlì multiplayer map in Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood and is also accessible.
  • In Assassin's Creed: Identity, the Abbey of San Mercuriale can be seen in Forlì, though it can't be visited.
