Ōmura Sumitada (大村 純忠, 1533 – 1587) was a Japanese daimyō who was famous for being the first among them to convert to Christianity. The Jesuit priest Gaspar Vilela, a prominent propagator of the Christian faith, was responsible for Sumitada's conversion, after which the daimyō became a fervent Christian. Sumitada gifted the Jesuits with the port of Nagasaki and allowed the Christians in his domain to destroy Buddhist temples, which amplified the animosity between the Japanese and the Christians.[1]
