Ēostre festivities at Ravensthorpe

Ēostre or Ostara was a pagan festival celebrated by Germanic people before being appropriated by Christianity as it spread through Northern Europe. It was celebrated near the vernal equinox, and shared its name with Ēostre, goddess of spring.

History[edit | edit source]

Ostara festivals were held at Ravensthorpe, where the settlement was donned with flowers and other decorations.[1] Participants could enter in events like searching for hidden eggs,[2] an archery competition,[3] and brawling in an arena.[4]

The custom to search for colorful hidden eggs also originated from the goddess Ēostre, who was said to have sent birds that changed into hares, after which they laid colored eggs.[5]

Behind the scenes[edit | edit source]

As part of Assassin's Creed: Valhalla's post-launch content, an Ostara festival event was added to the settlement mechanic for a limited time. The first in-game event ran from 18 March until 8 April, later extended until 15 April 2021. A second event ran from 21 April until 12 May 2022.
