The Yangon River (Burmese: လှိုင်မြစ်), also known as the Rangoon River or Hlaing River, is a river formed from the confluence of the Bago and Myitmaka Rivers in southern Myanmar. It is a marine estuary that runs from the city of Yangon to the Gulf of Martaban of the Andaman Sea.[1]
History[edit | edit source]
In 1725, the members of the Zhang Wei Union sailed along the Yangon River following Edward Kenway and Shimazu Saito's retrieval of a Piece of Eden from the Shwedagon Pagoda. While attempting to return to their flagship Fenghuang, however, they were betrayed by John Young, who stole the artifact,[2] took Yun Pyeong-Gyu hostage, and revealed himself as a Templar double agent.[3]
As John explained that the Templars had promised him a way to resurrect his fiancée Xialun Qing using the Pieces of Eden, Edward attempted to reason with his friend and convince him that the Templars were deceiving him. However, John only cared about bringing Qing back to life and had alerted the East India Company to their position. Just then, three Company ships sent by the Templar Grand Master Alan Jacob arrived and destroyed the group's vessel, causing Edward, John, Saito, and Yun to fall into the river.[3]
While John was picked up by a rowboat and escaped with the Piece of Eden, Edward, Saito, and Yun were saved by the timely arrival of Nagamasa and his men.[3] Nagamasa revealed that his crew had recruited a group of mercenaries from the Ayutthaya Kingdom, who boarded the two Company ships attacking the Fenghuang and killed their crews. The group then returned to the Fenghuang, where Edward informed Captain Rupiya of John's betrayal and gave the order to chase the last Company ship carrying John so they could capture him and recover the stolen Piece of Eden.[4]
