Behind the scenes[edit | edit source]
The Whistler is a reference to the whistling arrows historically invented by Modu Chanyu according to the "Biographies of the Xiongnu" in Sima Qian's Records of the Grand Historian. These were arrows which emitted a whistling sound as they flew through the air and served to signal to the chanyu's archers where to target. Modu rigorously trained and conditioned them into always releasing arrows in sync after his whistling arrow without hesitation, a tactic he ultimately used to assassinate his father Touman and usurp his position.[2]
The bow was the only bow available in the closed beta test of Assassin's Creed: Jade. Apart from being acquired automatically in the second mission "Homecoming", the player could also loot it from enemies. Despite the description of the weapon alluding to whistling arrows, they were not a gameplay feature. Instead, the Whistler always released fire arrows.
