Theodric's tomb in a church in Buckingham

Theodric (died c. 874) was the ealdorman of Oxenefordscire during the late 9th century. He was married to a minor noblemwoman named Eadwyn and was served by numerous thegns that included Geadric, Holt, Brant, Sherwin and Octe.

Around 874, Theodric was killed by the Great Summer Army led by Guthrum jarl, and was buried in a tomb within a church in Buckingham. Following this, his widow Eadwyn assumed his powers and control of the shire, and sought to negotiate an alliance with King Aelfred of Wessex to combat against the Vikings. Theodric's thegns disagreed with Eadwyn's decision and thus rebelled against her rule.[1] This lead to a civil war that eventually culminated with Eadwyn's defeat and capture by Geadric, through aid provided by Eivor Varinsdottir, Sigurd Styrbjornsson and Basim ibn Ishaq.[2]
