Temple Church

The Temple Church is a church in London, located in Westminster. It gave its name to the area of the Temple in central London.

History[edit | edit source]

Middle Ages[edit | edit source]

The peculiarly shaped church was built in 1185 for the Knights Templar, and was initially part of a larger complex that included residences and training grounds, as well as a crypt for ceremonies. Temple Church also functioned as a bank for noblemen, allowing the Templars to turn a profit.[1]

Stuart and Victorian era[edit | edit source]

In the 17th century, the church underwent its first refurbishment by the English architect Christopher Wren. He installed an organ and altar screen in the church, altered the paintings therein and also applied plaster to the marble columns in an attempt to fit the aesthetic tastes of the time. However in 1841, his works were undone by architects Sydney Smirke and Decimus Burton, who gave the church a touch of Gothic architecture.[1]

In 1868, the Assassins Jacob and Evie Frye visited Temple Church, assassinating Thomas Blackroot in its gardens on Henry Green's request.[2]

Modern times[edit | edit source]

In 1927, the funeral of Thaddeus Gift, Grand Master of the British Rite of the Templar Order, was held at the church after he was killed by the Black Cross, Albert Bolden, for embezzling money from the Order. Because Thaddeus' corruption had destroyed his reputation, no one but his son Darius Gift and the Templar Ferris attended the funeral.[3]
