Sappho (c. 630 – c. 570 BCE) was a poet from the Greek island of Lesbos known for her lyric poetry, written to be sung and accompanied by a lyre. She was counted among the Nine Lyric Poets along the likes of Bacchylides and Pindar.
Legacy[edit | edit source]
During the 5th century BCE, the school Sappho established in her home town of Mytilene was still in use.[1] Some of her works were still being kept in the Library of Alexandria in the 1st century BCE.[2]
