Salvador, originally São Salvador da Bahia de Todos os Santos, is the capital city of the State of Bahia in Brazil. It was the capital of Brazil from 1549 to 1763, when Rio de Janeiro became the capital.[1]
History[edit | edit source]
Salvador thrived in the early 18th century as many eager Europeans arrived hoping to make a living in the Americas.[2] Its lower city was a major financial center because of the teeming markets and its status as a port.[3] The Welsh pirate Edward Kenway, seeing Salvador as one of the best places to meet traders and earn quick money,[4] shipped wine, cocoa pods,[2] rice,[3] and plenty of tobacco to the city.[4]
