The River Rhine, also known as Renos to the Romans and Gauls,[1] is a major river in Central and Western Europe. During the Viking Age, it was a frequent target of Viking raids.

History[edit | edit source]

During the 3rd century, the Aleman general and member of the Liberalis Circulum, Accipiter, led several attacks against the Roman Empire along the Rhine.[2]

In the late 9th century, the jarlskona Eivor Varinsdottir of the Raven Clan discovered the river after Vagn deciphered a clue recovered from the body of the River Erriff champion. Eivor sailed to the monastery at Ferrières, killing the Frankish champion and claiming an Ulfberht Sword.[1] Following the death of the Frankish champion, the monastery hired a mercenary to act as a 'champion of the gods'.[3] Eivor would eventually eliminate the mercenary at Ferrières and claim Sir Gareth's Holy Sword.[4]
