Philip II (21 May 1527 – 13 September 1598) was King of Spain, Portugal, Naples, and Sicily. By his marriage to Mary I, he was also King consort of England and Ireland.

Biography[edit | edit source]

The announcement of his marriage to Mary in 1554 was met with a rebellion by the English politician Thomas Wyatt, who eventually surrendered after his defeat at the village of Charing in England.[1]

In 1584, Philip was gifted a Japanese kabuto helmet by the Tensho embassy. The first in Europe, it was the beginnings of trade relations with Japan.[2]
