Peter I Alekseevich (Russian: Пётр I Алексеевич; June 1672 – 8 February 1725), also known as Peter the Great, was Tsar of the Russian Empire from 1682 to 1725.

In 1703, he founded the city of Saint Petersburg, which would became the country's capital for more than 200 years.[1] He also established the Russian Academy of Sciences in 1724.[2]
