Mary I (1516 – 1558) was Queen of England and Queen of Ireland from 19 July 1553 until her death in 1558. She was also the fourth and penultimate monarch of the House of Tudor.
Biography[edit | edit source]
Mary was the eldest daughter of Henry VIII of England and the only one of his children by Catherine of Aragon to survive into adulthood. As a monarch, she is mainly remembered for her violent attempts to restore Catholicism as the state religion of England, burning hundreds of Protestants at the stake in the process, which earned her the soubriquet "Bloody Mary".[1]
In 1554, Mary announced her marriage to King Philip II of Spain, making her Spanish queen consort, and Philip Anglo-Irish king consort. Her announcement was met with a rebellion by Sir Thomas Wyatt. Their forces clashed in the village of Charing, with Wyatt eventually surrendering.[2]
Mary was also an affiliate of the Templar Order and was killed for her tyranny on 17 November 1558 by the Assassins, who favored Mary's younger half-sister and thereafter her successor, Elizabeth.[3]
