Leopold V (1157 – 1194) was Duke of Austria from 1177 and Duke of Styria from 1192 until his death.
Biography[edit | edit source]
In 1190 during the Third Crusade, Leopold took over Frederick Barbarossa's remaining army in the Holy Land following the Holy Roman Emperor's death. His men converged outside of the Ayyubid-occupied city of Acre in 1191, joining the Crusaders in besieging the city. Despite being repelled by Saladin numerous times, the Crusaders won the battle with aid from King Richard I of England. After the fall of Acre in July of that year, Leopold along with Philip II of France abruptly left the Holy Land with their armies, leaving Richard solely in command of the remaining expeditionary forces.[1]
