This article is about the umpire of the 428 BCE Pankration at the Olympics. You may be looking for the magistrate of Cyrene.

Leander was a hellanodikai who oversaw the Pankration event at the 428 BCE Olympic Games in the Sanctuary of Olympia.

He welcomed everyone to the stadium, announced the pankratiasts, and watched the matches closely, commenting on form. Outside of the contests, he watched over the training athletes.

In 428 BCE, Leander hosted the pankration event alongside Kallias, a former Olympic champion event who had now served as one of the judges. He later oversee the first two rounds of the events fought by the misthios Kassandra, who had replaced her fellow Spartan Testikles for the event. After Kassandra defeated Orion and Erastos in the first and second round respectively, Leander announced her final round against the reigning champion Dorieus which would take place sometime later.[1]

Later on in the finals, Kassandra defeated Doreius to claim the win for Sparta. As recognition of her new status as an Olympic champion, Leander crowned her with an olive wreath in front of the Olympic Tree.[2]

Leander, a character in Assassin's Creed: Odyssey, shares his name with the second protagonist of the story "Hero and Leander" in Greek mythology. The name itself is a combination of the Greek words λέων, (léōn) meaning 'lion', and ᾰ̓νήρ (anḗr), meaning 'man'.
