Kharak Singh (1801 – 1840) was the second ruler of the Sikh Empire, succeeding his father Ranjit Singh after his death in June 1839. He was the father of Pyara Kaur, a notable wielder of the Koh-i-Noor, and is an ancestor of Monima Das.
Kharak's reign as Maharaja was cut short by his poisoning in October 1839, which left him bedridden and which he eventually succumbed to a year later.[1] His death left the Sikh Empire in a state of turmoil,[2] as both his son Nau Nihal Singh, who succeeded him as Maharaja from 1839 to 1840, and brother Sher Singh, who reigned from 1841 to 1843, were similarly assassinated.[3][4] Eventually, Kharak's youngest brother Duleep Singh, who was only five years old at the time, was appointed Maharaja in 1843, though he was exiled to England not long after.[5]
