History[edit | edit source]
In 1509, after the recent earthquake, Iskender followed Prince Selim to Trebizond. One day, he heard Selim outraged over his father Sultan Bayezid's retreat into his Adrianoplian palace after the disaster. Explaining his plan to Iskender, Selim instructed his Janissary to be ready for all enemies, including the Ottoman Assassins and his older brother, Prince Ahmet. While Selim took his leave, Iskender explained that Ahmet had most likely sent men to kill him. Within a day and a half, Iskender and his men saw Ahmet's soldiers just outside the city, and then attacked and killed them accordingly.[1]
Two weeks later, Iskender and his Janissaries met with Selim at Varna and informed him that the Assassins had been tracking their movements. Realizing the Sultan's alliance with the Assassins, Iskender began to worry about the Janissaries' support for Selim becoming public. While fortifying the camp, they welcomed Selim's son Suleiman, who came to visit his father while on his way to Kefe, where he would serve as governor after finishing his studies. Realizing the Assassins may be coming for them, Iskender and his men decided to prioritize Selim's safety and hide their true allegiance until the time came for the next Sultan.[2]
