Hwithors is one of the horse hill figures located in northern Hamtunscire, England.
History[edit | edit source]
Nearly 3,000 years ago, the people native to this area in England dug trenches and implemented them with chalk, thus creating the outline of Hwithors. As time passed by, the community always kept the figure intact by making sure the trenches weren't overgrown by the grass and keeping its color.[1] Usually, the villagers of Uffington would come out every year and sing and chant around the horse, as a means of praying to their horse.[2] Throughout her travels, the Viking Eivor Varinsdottir visited the area upon her ventures in Hamtunscire.[3]
In 878, the Celtic witch-warrior Niamh of Argyll suggested Hwithors, also known as the "White Horse", to her allies, the Hidden One Hytham and seeress Valka of the Raven Clan, as an area to "destroy" Excalibur in front of both the Order of the Ancients and the Descendants of the Round Table. Hytham and Valka agreed as the latter prepared for a "blót", a burning sacrifice, for the sword. In reality, the three allies planned to fool both organizations and the whole of England by burning a replica of Excalibur while Niamh would carry the real sword back to Avalon.[4] After fooling a crowd of spectators with a sham chase, Niamh left with Excalibur as Valka and Hytham traveled to the White Horse for the ceremony.[2]
Valka and Hytham arrived at the top of the hill with the replica, where Hytham's fellow Hidden Ones had already made all the necessary preparations for the ceremony. Valka commenced the ritual, which quickly attracted an audience of villagers, ladies of the Women of the Mist, and members of the Order and the Descendants. The reactions from the crowd were mixed, from excitement to tears, as a member of Descendants came towards Valka to try and stop her. The seeress readied herself until Hytham met the member's attack and killed him, pushing him down the hill. As the ritual drew to a close, "Excalibur" was burned to ash, and Hytham and Valka's ruse proved successful.[5]
