Alpheios River

The Alpheios is a river running through the regions of Elis and Arkadia in Peloponnese, that was named after the river-god Alpheus.

History[edit | edit source]

The Altar of Zeus was located within the Sanctuary of Olympia, and it was said to have been made with the sacrificial ash of the burnt oxen that was mixed with the water from the river located near the Sanctuary.[1] When the Alpheios flooded in the Middle Ages along with the river Kladeos, the Sanctuary of Olympia was buried under four meters of silt and was eventually rediscovered in the 19th century.[2]

During the Peloponnesian War, a military camp was set up along the river.[3]

Mythology[edit | edit source]

According to the Greek mythology, Alpheus was along with Pineios from Thessaly, the river which aided the hero Herakles to clean up the stable of king Augeias as part of his tasks.[4]
