Guy of Lusignan (c. 1150 – 18 July 1194) was a French crusader who ruled as the King of Jerusalem from 1186 to 1192, and after that became the first ruler of what would become the Kingdom of Cyprus, having purchased the island from the Knights Templars. For the last 2 years of his reign in Jerusalem, his right to the throne was contested by a rival king, Conrad of Montferrat. This was because Guy was technically prince consort to the late Queen Sibylla, who died in 1190 leaving the throne to her sister Isabella, who was married to Conrad.[1]
Guy and Raymond III of Tripoli were initially enemies, although the threat posed by Saladin eventually forced them to reconcile. In 1187, Guy and his forces marched to relieve Raymond who was being besieged at Tiberias by Saladin and the Saracens. Making the grave mistake of forcing his way through the Saracen army during the Battle of Hattin, Guy abandoned his only source of fresh water.[2]
Guy and his men were unable to advance or retreat and forced to camp on the dry plain. The surrounding Saracens harassed them with constant volleys of arrows and set fire to the grass in order to further exhaust their enemies from heat.
