Diego Velázquez de Cuéllar (1465 – 1524) was a Spanish conquistador and the first Governor of Cuba.

After many attempts had been made to settle near the Havana Bay in Cuba, around 1514, de Cuéllar managed to establish a settlement that would eventually become the island's capital, Havana.[1][2]
