The De la Serre family was a French noble family affiliated with the Templar Order. They were fairly wealthy, as evidenced by their ownership of two luxury estates, one in Versailles and another in Paris.[1]

History[edit | edit source]

A very old and noble family, the De la Serres had always possessed strong tries to the Templars. By the 18th century, the family had produced several generations of Grand Masters of the French Rite, and developed close ties with their British counterparts, the Carroll family of England.[2]

By 1756, François de la Serre had joined the Templar Order[3] and eventually followed in his ancestors' footsteps by rising to the rank of Grand Master. He also married a woman named Julie and the couple had a daughter, Élise, in 1768.[1]

In 1776, Julie and Élise were attacked in a Parisian alley by two men, one of whom wielded a Hidden Blade. Julie managed to kill one of the assailants, but was doubtful of the veracity of the apparent Assassin.[2] Later that year, the family took in a young boy named Arno, son of the late French Assassin Charles Dorian, and raised him as their ward.[4][5] In time, Élise and Arno developed romantic feelings for each other, but elected to keep their relationship secret.[2]

Tragedy struck the family in 1778, when Julie fell prey to a deadly illnes, leaving François and Élise devastated.[2] In 1789, François formally inducted his daughter into the Templar Order, but was killed shortly after in a coup organized by his former lieutenant, François-Thomas Germain.[6] With the deaths of her parents, Élise was left the sole survivor of her family and spent years tracking down Germain to exact her revenge. She was aided in her mission by Arno, who had joined the Assassins, but despite managing to slay Germain in 1794, Élise was killed in the attempt, rendering the De la Serre family extinct.[7]

Legacy[edit | edit source]

The de la Serres had a profound impact on Arno, having adopted him early on after his father's murder in December 1776.[4][5] His relationship with Élise was a bright spot for him amidst the turmoil of the French Revolution,[1] and its unfortunate end lingered in his mind when the revolution ended.[8]
