The De la Serre family was a French noble family affiliated with the Templar Order. They were fairly wealthy, as evidenced by their ownership of two luxury estates, one in Versailles and another in Paris.[1]

A very old and noble family, the De la Serres had always possessed strong tries to the Templars. By the 18th century, the family had produced several generations of Grand Masters of the French Rite, and developed close ties with their British counterparts, the Carroll family of England.[2]
By 1756, François de la Serre had joined the Templar Order[3] and eventually followed in his ancestors' footsteps by rising to the rank of Grand Master. He also married a woman named Julie and the couple had a daughter, Élise, in 1768.[1]
In 1776, Julie and Élise were attacked in a Parisian alley by two men, one of whom wielded a Hidden Blade.
