Cynewise was a 9th century Anglo-Saxon woman from Essexe, England.
In the 870s, Cynewise was ridiculed by the community's children due to her being unwed at her age. At some point, she devised of a plan to attract a young red-haired neighbor but to no avail. Luckily, the Viking shieldmaiden Eivor Varinsdottir came by and met with Cynewise. There, she lied to Eivor, who helped kidnap the young man. However, after bringing the man to Cynewise, she revealed her true intentions to him and Eivor. Despite the deceit, the man became infatuated with her act, so Cynewise thanked Eivor for her help. After Eivor left, the spinster romantically embraced the young man.[1]
