Sir Christopher Wren PRS FRS (1632 – 1723) was an acclaimed English architect. He was also an anatomist, astronomer, geometrist, and physicist.
Biography[edit | edit source]
At some point, Wren lived in the neighborhood of Great Scotland Yard, which had formerly been the residence of the Scottish monarchy.[1] In the late 17th century, he made refurbishments to the Temple Church, installing an organ and altar screen in the church. In addition, he whitewashed the church's paintings and applied plaster to the marble columns to suit the aesthetic tastes of the time.[2]
Wren was also responsible for the design of the Monument to the Great Fire of London, built between 1671 and 1677. While he had several ideas for the sculpture that would rest atop the Monument, including a statue of King Charles II, a woman wielding a sword, and a phoenix triumphantly rising from the flames, he ultimately settled for a brass orb.[3]
