The Santa Maria della Visitazione (English: Saint Mary of the Visitation) is a church situated in Venice's southern Dorsoduro district.

History[edit | edit source]

The church was founded in the 15th century and was dedicated to Jerome, the patron saint of librarians and encyclopedia writers, though it was rededicated to commemorate when Jesus of Nazareth's mother Mary visited her relative Elizabeth, the mother of John the Baptist, while they both were still pregnant.[1]

At some point, the Roman Hidden One Leonius' remains were transported to a hidden tomb beneath the church. Centuries later, during the Renaissance, the Italian Assassin Ezio Auditore discovered the tomb, retrieved Leonius' Assassin Seal inside, and brought it to the Sanctuary under Monteriggioni's Villa Auditore; combined with the other five seals, this would later grant Ezio the Armor of Altaïr.[2]
