Chetumal is a city in Mexico.

History[edit | edit source]

In 1520, a ship captained by Spanish conquistador Hernán Cortés arrived in the Americas. As Cortés, La Malinche, and Giovanni Borgia made their way to the Aztec capital of Tenochtitlan, they became aware of rumors of bearded men, foreigners like them, living with the Maya in Chetumal. La Malinche's diplomacy graced the group with access to Chetumal, discovering two Spaniards living among the Maya: Gonzalo Guerrero and Gerónimo de Aguilar, both of whom joined the group in their journey to Tenochtitlan.[1]
