Bonacolto Contarini (died 1493) was a Venetian slaver and a member of the Italian Rite of the Templar Order who lived during the Renaissance.

Biography[edit | edit source]

Born into the House of Contarini, one of the founding families of Venice, Bonacolto joined the Templar Order at some point in his life.[1] After the Templars, particularly the House of Pazzi, were driven out of Florence thanks to the efforts of the Assassin Ezio Auditore da Firenze,[2] they sent Bonacolto to re-establish their influence in the city.[3]

In 1493, Bonacolto entered Florence and used his family's riches to strong-arm merchants and officials and recruit them to the Templar cause. He kidnapped those who refused and kept them captive in an old wine cellar near an abandoned Contarini manse, intending to sell them as slaves to foreign merchants.[4] He would also order his guards to patrol the streets of Florence and keep watch for any Assassins that could interfere with his plans.[5]

True enough, Ezio, now a Master Assassin, heard of the Templar resurgence in his hometown while in Venice searching for Girolamo Savonarola. He called for aid from Assassin Guilds in Europe, particularly the Spanish Brotherhood, who sent a team of Assassins to assist him.[3] With additional help from Corvo Antonelli and Perina di Bastian, they were able to eliminate the Templars in the city and drive Bonacolto out of hiding.[6]

Bonacolto soon withdrew to an ancestral keep in the countryside in an attempt to wait out for reinforcements. However, the Assassins stormed the keep and eliminated his guards before assassinating Bonacolto.[7]
