Great auks (Pinguinus impennis) were a flightless bird that, prior to their extinction through exploitative hunting, could be found primarily in the Northern Hemisphere where the northern Atlantic and Arctic Oceans intersected, though its fossils have been found as far south as Spain and the Mediterranean Sea. The only modern species in the genus Pinguinus, it is unrelated to penguins, which were discovered later, live near exclusively in the Southern Hemisphere, and were so named by sailors because of their physical resemblance to the great auk.[1]
The Assassin-turned-Templar Shay Cormac frequently encountered them when exploring islands in the North Atlantic, where they often gathered in flocks on rocky beaches and fled into the water when approached.[2]
