Once butler to the wealthy widow who originally owned and ran the manor at Great Inagua, Bernard was in secret her lover. Separated by the distance in their social classes, they had nevertheless been deeply committed to each other in private.

When du Casse attacked and took Great Inagua by force, Bernard had been away procuring provisions. The widow's son, a youth of 19, resisted the attackers and was slaughtered by Du Casse for his Hidden Blade, which the Templar coveted. The widow had tried to intervene and was also mercilessly struck down. When Bernard returned, she was bleeding out and died in his arms. Having no other family, she bequeathed the manor and all her wealth to him.

Bernard thereafter acted faithfully on his Lady's behalf, helping those in the area as she wished. He remained devoted to his lover's memory, and to the repair of the manor in her name.

Despite his restrained and affable exterior, Bernard was the previous leader of the West Indies Bureau, which he ran secretly from the manor. He was mentoring the widow's son, who had recently joined the Brotherhood under his tutelage.

After the attack, Bernard would have taken revenge on Du Casse himself, but he knew it would likely mean his own death. As she was dying the widow had made him promise not to seek vengeance, but rather to dedicate the rest of his life to philantropy. Torn between his vows to the Brotherhood, and his deathbed promise to his lover, Bernard reconciled to remain at Inagua and honor his Lady's wishes.

Bernard had been aware of Edward Kenway and watched him from a distance for some time. He perceived Edward held the natural disposition of an Assassin, even if he didn't yet realize it himself. Bernard suggested this to Edward once he trusted him.

Bernard recognized the blade on Edward's wrist as the one Du Casse had taken from the widow's son. Despite being a poignant and difficult realization, he believed it apt that Edward kept the blade.

Bernard had intended to leave and return to England after fully restoring the manor with Edward's help. However, he decided to stay on indefinitely to serve the people at Great Inagua whom he had come to consider his family.
