Most of Rowland Sharp's early life was unremarkable, spent around the Kentish coast, where he worked aboard fishing dogger to gut and clean the day's catch. Returning from one of these fishing trips in 1716, Sharp was press-ganged into service aboard a fleet bound for the West Indies to protect British colonial interests.

Though he chafed at the harsh conditions and bullying from officers, he proved a popular figure amongst the other deckhands. Men made fast friends of the easygoing Sharp, whose genuine disposition they trusted. Corralling a ragtag group of sailors together, Sharp deserted the Navy a year later in 1717.

For much of the following year, Sharp's gang ran small-time smuggling operations along the Florida coast, trafficking what they could from arms to illicit stockpiles of rum. Here, Sharp employed his affable nature to build a network of eyes and ears, paying off soldiers and rubbing shoulders with rogues. Eventually, answering a call for a fleet in search of fortune and adventure, Sharp came into the employ of Stede Bonnet, who had recently cut loose from Edward Thatch's company.

Sharp and Bonnet quickly came into a friendship of mutual reliance. Bonnet's leadership was the first under which Sharp had been made to feel like an equal rather than a subordinate, and the latter's connections proved invaluable to Bonnet's earnest, if mostly bumbling, endeavors at piracy. This often led Sharp to butt heads with Ignatius Pell, another member of the crew who had his own sights set on command of Bonnet's small fleet.

At Pell's urging, Bonnet pillaged eleven vessels en route to Charles-Towne, which proved to be his undoing-—it was a trap set by Hunters under the Crown's edict, whose sloops hounded Bonnet's fleet into the shallows of Cape Fear River. To safekeep his spoils, Bonnet ordered Sharp and Pell to take his ship and make for Mystery Island. Sharp could only watch as Bonnet then opened fire on the sloops with his remaining crippled ships, drawing their attention away from the fleeing Revenge.

Sharp made his escape successfully to Mystery Island, where he had orders to await the arrival of Bonnet's friend and confidante, Edward Kenway.
